Family of Two Displaced by Two-Alarm Fire in Algiers

December 19, 2017

On Monday, December 18, 2017 at 10:22 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 9-1-1 call reporting a residential fire in the 5800 block of Tullis Algiers. Dispatched at 10:22 p.m., the first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 10:29 p.m., finding an unoccupied two-story, townhome-styled dwelling at 5844 Tullis Dr. heavily involved with exposures to the immediate left and right. Firefighters quickly conducted primary searches of the two exposed dwellings, at 5840 and 5848 Tullis Dr., while preparing to make an aggressive interior attack on the fire building.  It was determined that the townhome at 5840 Tullis Dr. was the only one of the three dwellings occupied at the time of fire.  The residents of 5840 Tullis Dr., an adult female and her granddaughter, escaped safely prior to NOFD arrival.

A heavy fire load, consisting of trash and old furniture, assisted in the persistence of this fire and prompted the call for a second-alarm at 12:16 a.m.  Shortly after firefighters were ordered to exit the original fire building for safety concerns, the second floor of 5844 Tullis Dr. collapsed.  This very stubborn fire extended into the second floor and attic of the occupied dwelling at 5840 Tullis Dr. causing considerable damage.  Firefighters were able to prevent the extension into 5848 Tullis Dr. although the property, currently under renovation, did receive slight smoke and water damage.

Fifteen NOFD units, carrying forty NOFD Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 1:09 p.m. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  Entergy assisted with the mitigation of this incident and the American Red Cross was on the scene assisting the residents displaced by this incident.
