NOFD Battles a Two Alarm Fire with Fatalities in New Orleans East

December 29, 2017

On Friday, December 29, 2017 at 1:36 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received a 9-1-1 call reporting a house on fire at 7731 Wave Drive. The first company arrived at 1:42 a.m. and found a one-story wood-framed dwelling with heavy smoke and fire coming from the front door and front windows. Firefighters made forcible entry to gain access into the residence while aggressively fighting the heavy blaze. A Second Alarm was called at 2:06 a.m. due to multiple residents being trapped in the home. An immediate search of the home was conducted and firefighters found four victims. Two residents, an eighty year old adult male and a three year old male child were rescued by firefighters and transported to an area hospital. Two additional residents, a seventy year old male and a sixty-nine year old female, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Neighbors reported that they tried to gain entry into the home to rescue the residents prior to NOFD arrival but were unsuccessful.

Fourteen fire companies and forty-two NOFD Operations personnel were used to bring this fire under control at 2:22 a.m. The New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS), New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), Entergy New Orleans and the New Orleans Coroner’s Office also assisted in the mitigation of this incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
