On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 (H.R. 1319) into law. The $1.9 trillion package was designed to directly combat the COVID 19-pandemic and its impacts to states and municipalities. The City of New Orleans received $388 million in ARPA funds, and as of Feb. 2024, $245 million has been spent and another $48.5 million is obligated, representing 76 percent of the City’s total appropriation.

The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice Coordination (OCJC), led by Commissioner Tenisha Stevens, has been awarded a capstone $500,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, recognizing eight years of progress by New Orleans towards safely reducing the local jail population while addressing inequities in the justice system. The grant marks a total of $5.8 million invested in New Orleans by the foundation as part of the Safety and Justice Challenge, a $381.5 million national initiative to reduce the misuse and over-use of jail and eliminate racial inequity in local criminal justice systems.

The City of New Orleans today announced that the Department of Public Works (DPW) is collaborating with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) on an ongoing streetlight project along Interstate 10, from Florida Avenue to Iroquois Street, and a portion of Interstate 610 (See map). As part of this initiative, DPW has temporarily deactivated the streetlights along this stretch to facilitate repairs and upgrades by DOTD.
The City of New Orleans today announced that beginning Tuesday, Feb. 20, weather permitting, Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, Command Construction Industries, LLC, will shift existing lane closures on Franklin Avenue, from Mithra Street to Frankfort Street, for north and southbound vehiclular traffic to accommodate construction on the Milneburg Group A construction project.
